Raggaschlucht - wild water - masterpiece of creation
Where the wild waters of the high mountains meet ancient rocks, is a place where you have to stand your ground. Beating a path through rock, through narrow fissures and over breath-taking waterfalls into the valley. Enter, but don’t forget to close your mouth again. Anyone who has ever visited the Raggaschlucht and observed the water making its way into the valley, will enjoy no end of amazement.

RAGGASCHLUCHT IS CURRENTLY CLOSED – START SUMMER SEASON MAY 2024
Winter break until May 2024.
Since 29th October 2023, Raggaschlucht is closed for 2023 because of the current weather situation. Probably from the beginning of May 2024 we will be open again daily for visitors.

During the opening hours, in exceptional cases or due to extreme weather conditions (e.g. thunderstorms, storms), the gorge may be closed at any time for safety reasons. Safety has the highest priority.

Interesting information & tips
We recommend hiking shoes (partly wet passages on the wooden footbridges) and clothing adjusted for the season. It can be very cool in the gorge. After rainy days and in autumn, take weatherproof and warmer clothing/jacket with you (at some places it can drip very heavily from the rocks onto the footbridges).
Surefootedness is required for a hike through the gorge. We do not advise people who are not sure-footed to visit the Raggaschlucht. The way back through the forest is a bit steep in the last third. Total walking time (circular route) is about 1.5 hours. The canyon can only be walked in one direction (from bottom to top) There are no alternative routes directly on the boardwalks.
Children must be sure-footed and be specially supervised during the hike. We recommend a hike for children from the age of 6. Walking with prams is not possible.
Dogs are generally allowed on a leash. Please note, however, that the ascent of more than 200 m of altitude is continuously on wooden footbridges. The wooden footbridges can be wet and slippery. All this can be a great effort for your dog and possibly lead to injuries. In the gorge, sometimes the background noise is very loud for dogs.
In case of heavy rain the gorge is closed. Please inform yourself before arrival if the canyon is open (Raggaschlucht cashdesk +43 4785 333 or tourist office Flattach +43 4785 615). In case of extreme weather conditions (e.g., thunderstorms, storms) the gorge may be closed temporarily for safety reasons.
Outside the official opening hours and in winter, Raggaschlucht is closed for safety reasons!
In the high season a visit during off-peak hours (11.00 am to 02.00 pm) is recommended.
Through the power of water, to natural landmark

Over millions of years the wild waters have shaped, smoothed and sculpted the rocks in the mountains, and today we can experience this natural spectacle up close. Of course you can ‘only’ walk through Raggaschlucht, take photos and enjoy the breath-taking natural surroundings, but you can also take some knowledge and expertise home with you about how it came about. The Geological Educational Path in the Raggaschlucht is a themed trail which provides information and a background as to how this natural spectacle came about, served to you on a silver platter. How did it start to develop millions ago and how has the gorge been turned into an experience that you can encounter today

The village Flattach is directly opposite. We wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothes because the water is foaming and splashing in the gorge and the footbridges could be wet (be careful when it is wet – there is a danger of slipping). After about 10 minutes’ walk through the village of Schmelzhütten we reach the cash desk (entrance to the gorge).
Let’s start! It is simply impressive; our way leads us over artistically arranged wooden footbridges. Past vertical rock faces the roar of the water fills the air. In thousands of years of work the Raggabach created one of the most beautiful natural gorges in the Alps.
After about 200 meters of altitude difference and 800 m length we have walked through the gorge, and we deserve a refreshment. Now we take the way back to the valley. After about 1.5 hours of total walking time (circular route) we reach our starting point again. As a souvenir from our visit, we can purchase from a wide range of beautiful and funny souvenirs, magnets, stones and much more at Anita’s Kiosk – right next to the cashdesk. The inn ‘Gasthaus Raggaschlucht’ is a nice place to stop and have a drink after you visited the Raggaschlucht.

Two large, free parking spaces are available. From there it is about 10 minutes’ walk to the cash desk.
